ABOUT E&WHCC - the present!
East & West Hendred Cricket Club has been playing league cricket for over 40 years, and in 2021 we joined the Cherwell Cricket League after its merger with the OCA. We now field 3 teams each Saturday, and in 2023 the 1st XI will play in Division 3A, the 2nd XI in Division 6C and the 3rd XI in Division 8D.
The 1st and 2nd XI play at Mill Lane, East Hendred. The 3rd XI play at Ardington Sports Club.
In this league, 2 formats are played throughout the season (Win/Lose during early and late season, and Win/Lose/Draw during mid season).
The match duration is longer in higher divisions (50 overs) and shorter in lower divisions (40 overs). Start times vary between 12.30pm and 1pm depending on which format we are playing.
The 1st XI won Division 5C in 2021, and secured promotion the following season from Division 4A, under the captaincy of Andrew Francis. They are now representing the club at the highest level it has ever played, and will be captained by John Orchiston in 2023, with Andew as vice.
Set up in 2004, the 2nd XI has enjoyed many successful seasons of late, securing promotion from division 7 and winning the Steve Dixon Cup in 2021, then were runners-up in 2022. They will be captained by Liam Rainbow in 2023, with James Hilliam as vice.
The 3XI is our newest team and has been running since 2021 under the enthusiastic leadership of Dan Atkins. Dan is a long standing member of the club and seized the challenge of captaining the team which wasn't without its headaches! Producing teams full of future talent from our junior divisions, Dan will captain the team again in 2023, Josh King is vice captain, playing in division 8D.
Downs League (Wednesday night)
We have 2 teams playing T20 Cricket in the Downs Cricket League. These teams wear coloured EWHCC kit, maroon pad covers, and matches are played using a pink ball. In this league, the away team always bats first, to help with players travelling after work.
Matches start at 6pm. Our captains for 2023 are Archie Napper (1XI) and Robin Alner (2XI)
Friday night training for the Juniors, All Stars & Dynamos continued to be a real success with over 100 youngsters regularly training and socialising from 5pm each week.
With so many very talented girls in our junior section, the Club was keen to provide an opportunity for them to develop and whilst they are always welcome to play in the Senior teams, we felt it was the right moment to bring in some County qualified female coaches to help the Club develop a Ladies team. The training sessions were a hit and the Club will be building on this fantastic base for 2023 with a range of Ladies matches scheduled for the early part of the season. The Ladies team will be captained by Alicia Bosley and managed by Dawn Barksfield.
Most importantly the number of people who are part of the club, be they players, coaches, volunteers or parents has grown and we really are thrilled to be part of a club which is at the heart of the community.
We welcome players of all ages and abilities, families or individuals, men and women, girls and boys, players and non-players.
We have worked hard over the past few years to develop a vibrant, friendly, welcoming community sports hub with beautiful facilities right on your doorstep in Mill Lane. We have now taken on the ground at Ardington so we have even more space for matches giving everyone the opportunity to play.
If you want to get involved on the playing or non-playing side, volunteer to help preparing the ground, umpire, score or you would prefer to just sit back, enjoy a drink and watch the game, you will always be made to feel most welcome.
For those who are interested in the Club's history a very interesting recount can be found here.
