MATCH REPORTS JUNIORS - 2021

U 13s v Steventon - 29 Apr 2021

Good win in our first game tonight. Well done all.

Barney just pips Isaac to player of the match. All batters take a look at the stats.

We are aiming for a SR (strike rate) of at least 100 and an SS (%of scoring shots) of 80%, in T20 format games.

We’ll work on this in training. I think we were a little deep in our fielding positions. We bowled well and to restrict a side to less than 90 in 20 overs is a real achievement.

Well done, tougher tests ahead.

U 11s v Challow - 2 May 2021

So! The first thing to mention is that the players did not need to be dressed in endless layers of vests, shirts, jumpers, fleeces, as perhaps Saturday evening might have hinted at. The sun shone, the sky was blue, and the chill was kept to a manageable level - thank goodness.

The first game of the season; Challow won the toss and elected to field first. The Hendred batting pairs consisted of - Niamh & Lily, Jonathan & Darcy, George C & Charlie, George B & Balin. For the uninitiated, each pair bats for 4 overs, the batter cannot be out, but if they lose their wicket the team loses 5 runs, the team score starts at 200; and oh! How those older players in the senior teams would love such a start…

At the end of the 16 overs Hendred had added 57 on to their opening total to amass 257. What was great to see was that each one of the 8 when at the crease valued their wicket, realising that to lose 5 runs makes attaining a decent total harder, Hendred lost but one wicket, and that was an unfortunate ‘played-on’.

Niamh – 6 :  Lily – 1 : Darcy – 4 : Jonathan – 4 : George C – 1 : Charlie – 1 : George B – 7 : Balin – 4

When it came time for Hendred to bowl, each player, and that includes the wicket keeper, is allowed 2 overs each.  There were many fine efforts in the bowling department, and some vastly improved bowling actions from last year, you know who you are!

Challow, having a much larger pool of players from which select their team did eventually overtake the Hendred score, but that’s not the whole story, it took them until three overs to go to, and in the process they lost 2 wickets. The fielding from Hendred was great, and there was barely a fielding error in sight.

Niamh – 0 for 12 : Lily – 0 for 12 : Darcy – 0 for 17 :  Jonathan – 0 for 14 : George C – 0 for 12 : Charlie – 1 for 6 : George B – 0 for 8 : Balin – 1 for 8

U 15s v Cumnor - 10 May 2021

On a windy Monday evening and with a depleted team the U15s took on Cumnor in their first game of the season.  With only 9 players due to illness and injury since Friday (soon to become 10, thanks Joseph Cockburn) Archie won the toss and chose to bat first.

Our two openers, Archie and Ethan were unlucky to be out fairly early on.  We then had a stand of 38 between Rowan and Ollie that included some great shots from both of them.  We then lost a few quick wickets to some good bowling before we added another 30 runs for the last 3 wickets with some good shots and great running from Alfie and Barney and set Cumnor a very competitive 79.

The Cumnor openers got off to a steady start against some very tight bowling from Archie and Ollie.  A great piece of fielding from Rowan and great hand work from Alfie saw the first wicket fall with a run out which was quickly followed by a great catch by Barney.

Kitty and Ethan then came on and kept thing equally tight with Kitty picking up her first wicket clean bowling one of Cumnor's batsmen who was in and set. Two very tight overs from Barney and an excellent over from Jack (1 wicket for 3 runs) set things up nicely for Ethan to come back on and bowl a very good last over and despite a couple of big hits we got the job done by 5 runs and a great victory.

A very good all round performance from the whole team especially with the ball, our fielding was exceptional.  A big thank you to all who played, you all contributed to the win.  One thing to note was we only bowled 6 wides and that can be the difference between winning and losing !
